Queensland Strawberries

About the Queensland strawberry industry

  • Strawberry farmingThe strawberry season starts in May and finishes in October every year. (Winter product for Australia)
  • There are approximately 200 strawberry growers in Queensland, covering 600 hectares of land.
  • The majority of growers are on the beautiful Sunshine Coast just north of Brisbane.
  • The Queensland strawberry industry produces between 6,000 tons and 15,000 tons of strawberries per season - that is about 60 million punnets of strawberries per season!
  • The industry is worth about $180 million to the Queensland economy.
  • Unlike some big Asian countries where 100 farmers die of chemical poisoning per year, Queensland has been very rigorous on farm safety practices and food safety. We have had only 1 accidental loss in the last twenty years! This means much safer food is available right on your doorstep. Be aware of imported strawberries.
  • All growers are aware of Quality Assurance and Food Safety programs and they all implement one or more of the following programs: Freshcare, SQF2000, SQF1000, HACCP, Woolworths Quality Assurance Standard (WQA), ISO 9000, EureoGAP, Enviroveg, Farmsafe.
